Cryptozoology refers to the study of hidden animals. These animals are either not officially cataloged as existing or thought to be extinct because no major evidence can prove they are still around. Many are based on myths, legends, and speculations from eye witnesses. Some of the most famous cryptids include Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Chupacabra, Jersey Devil, Wendingo, and the Giant Octopus. While not an official science, the subject has a large amount of followers with different backgrounds.
Once in a while, these creatures are proven to exist. The Komodo Dragon was thought to be a myth until discovered in 1912. The deep sea Coelacanth was believed to be extinct for millions of years until one was caught off the coast of South Africa in 1938. And there are many other examples.
I believe what keeps cryptozoology going strong is that many people who devote themselves to it are extremely serious. They are searching for possible real creatures and not creatures of fantasy, which they admit some of these creatures may very well be. These animals also get labeled as monsters, which automatically seeps into the brain as being possible tales of fright. Nightmare are made of some by these creatures. The search for the unknown is always going to entice people.
Television is full of programs based on the search to finding more information on if these mysterious creatures exists. Monster Quest, Destination Truth are a couple of my favorites. And let's not forgot the classic In Search of... from the late 70's. I loved that show as a kid.
