My Favorite Zombie Movies

This edition is all about zombies. The walking dead.

As stated previously, these are not the movies I feel are the best in the genre but the ones I can watch over and over again. Here are 8 of my favorite zombie movies


* Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Really the one that started it all. Gruesome, grainy, and fantastic. I can remember watching this at a very young age with my head buried in the pillow. And I still get quesy when I see the zombies chomping on intestines.


* Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

This film uses the more true tales of zombies from voodoo lore. This flick is sheer terror from the fear of being buried alive to nightmare hallucinations. Bill Pullman is amazing in the lead. The statement "Let me hear you sceam." takes on a whole new meaning.


* Dawn of the Dead (1978)

My all time favorite zombie movie. George Romero does it again. The mall setting is perfect. Even with the glimpses of hope sprinkled in, the dread never seems to leave the tone of the film. And the special effects have never been better.


* 28 Days Later (2002)

I hate putting this movie into the zombie category since they are really just infected people, but it's a minor detail. This movie is outstanding reminding us all once again that during times of crisis, humans are every bit as dangerous as the monsters. I can recall watching this at the theater and seeing the shots of the empty streets of London gave me chills. Then all hell breaks loose. You'd better be a fast runner to survive.


* Re-Animator (1985)

Oh that Herbert West and his need to re-animate the dead. Stuart Gordon creates one of the best movie adaptations from a H.P. Lovecraft tale and Jeffrey Combs became a horror icon. Gory twisted fun for all!


* Shaun of the Dead (2004)

An amazing homage to all the great zombie movies of the past, yet this movie also carves out it's own unique path. Funny, gruesome, and just a damn good flick.


* Zombie aka Zombi 2 (1978)

Lucio Fulci movies always have a great premise but they sometimes get muddle during the process. What the man really relies on is visuals and does this have some of the sickest deaths scenes ever. And a zombie fighting a shark. Enough said.


* [REC] (2007)

Talk about on the edge of your seat horror films. While it borrows from a lot of movies, it manages to keep things fresh enough and shot in a manner to keep everything interesting and intense.
